I’m Marty Engle, a lifelong artist with an eye for the bold, the striking and the unusual and a somewhat haunted sensibility. I’ve been painting since I was 11 years old, starting oil painting lessons at a local senior center. From there I went to art school in Atlanta where I developed my design and illustration skills. I’ve had some long breaks from the easel, to move across country twice, raise twin girls, author two book series and move from the world of fine art to commercial design as a creative director and back again to fine art. I am a born story-teller, with both the brush and words on a page.

My work explores the space where the sensual meets the supernatural, where classic oil portraiture collides with modern myth capturing the harrowing yet beautiful experience of being human. Every piece in this shop is hand-painted by me in my Tennessee studio (affectionately called the haunted mansion and decorated as such) using traditional oil paints on canvas or linen in the time honored tradition — featuring gothic heroines, monsters with hearts, shadowy romances, and strange, beautiful things that live just beyond the glint of awareness.

I believe in making fine art connect to deep emotions and shared experience through allegory and mythic symbolism — and making it accessible.
